At an altitude of over 1000 feet the spa town of “Aquae Arnemetiae” is in the heart of The White Peak and Derbyshire Dales. This is a location we have often been through but rarely visited. The type of walking will be very much dependant on the leaders; it could be limestone, sandstone, moorland, river valleys or The Dragons Back.

Walk Details (to date)

A WalkTrevor Whittaker, 0 miles To be Advised
Starting from Earl Sterndale we're up but mainly down Hitter Hill. Then it's up and over Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill before dropping down to the High Edge Raceway. Through the University of Sheffield Research Labs and the karting site brings us to a short stretch on the road before we climb to Grimlow Tower / Solomon's Temple and drop down into Buxton through the park. Expect some steep up's and down's as we traverse the limestone ridge together with the odd slippery outcrop but also fantastic views of both the Dark and White Peak.

B WalkRobert Eccles, 11.3 miles Moderate
View MapDownload GPX fileThe B walk is the same as the C but rather than catch the coach all the way back to Buxton we'll get off again at Harpur Hill and head west on Grin Low Road before climbing to Grinlow Tower view point. We'll drop down through Buxton Country Park and take the Broadwalk via the Pavillion Gardens. It's a moderate 11.3 miles with 550m of ascent. NB: the GPS route is for the additional part of the walk - see the C walk route for the rest.

C WalkRobert Eccles, 9 miles Moderate
View MapDownload GPX fileStarting from just outside Buxton we head north east along Green Lane and around the limestone works to Hassop Farm. Dropping down into Chee Dale we follow the Monsal Trail into Wye Dale before turning off to travel the length of Deep Dale and Back Dale. We finish at the bookshop south of Buxton where the coach will collect us and take us into Buxton. It's a moderate 9 mile with 450m of ascent that takes in the beauty of The Derbyshire Dales and demonstrates their importance to the local economy.

D WalkSue Baxendale, 5 miles Easy
From Buxton walk through the town (sorry no time for shopping) to The Crescent and Pump Room. Then through the Pavillion Gardens and on to Serpentine Walk. Across a couple of fields then through housing estate to entrance to Buxton Country Park. Gentle climb on good track up through the woods and then across fields to reach view point know as Grinlow Tower or Solomons Temple. Descend to Grin Low Road and follow this for a while before taking path back through the fields, past Fern House to the A515. Short stretch of road walking to go under the railway viaduct then field paths to Morrisons Supermarket on A6. Continue back to Buxton via Ashwood Dale Park.
