A village at the heart of the Lake District National Park that has somehow managed to retain all of its charm despite its popularity. Walking is typical Lakeland: either a gentle stroll by a lake or scrambling up a cliff. Loughrigg Cave (an old slate mine) is impressive as is Helm Crag topped with The Lion and The Lamb which dominates the village.

Walk Details (to date)

A WalkRobert Eccles, 12 miles Strenuous
View MapDownload GPX fileWe start the same as Carol and Derrick; off the coach at the Low Wood Hotel and climb to High Skelghyll then drop into Ambleside. Next is Miller Brow, Lily Tarn, before we're onto and over Loughrigg Fell. Continuing north-west we climb as far as Blea Crag before dropping to Easdale Tarn and Far Easdale. Finally we turn south east and make for Grasmere. Overall 3,300 feet of ascent with, weather permitting, fantastic views especially of the Langdales and the likes of Bow Fell and Pavey Ark.

B WalkPaul Brown, 10 miles Moderate
We alight on the A591 north of Troutbeck Bridge (grid ref. NY 394 009) and follow Wain Lane to Middlerigg Tarn, then climb steadily for about a mile to join Robin Lane, an undulating track which we follow to High Skelghyll. We continue past Jenkin Crag then descend through pleasant woodland to Ambleside. We then walk to Rydal Hall and Rydal (Wordsworth associations), cross the A591, then cross the river Rothay to walk alongside Rydal Water. After Rydal Water a short climb then a descent to the south end of Grasmere Lake. We walk along the shore for about ¾ mile before joining a minor road which takes us into Grasmere village. If the weather is clear expect good views across Windermere to the mountains.

C WalkMichael Counter, 7 miles Moderate
Alight the coach in Ambleside, Rothay Park, Miller Brow, Loughrigg Fell 1101', dropping down to Loughrigg Terrace, High Close, Dow Bank, Speading Crag, Silver How 1292', dropping down Allan Bank and into Grasmere. This walk does involve lakeland fell hill walking, but that extra little effort is well worth it for the views down on to Grasmere
