Nestled at the foot of the famous Snake Pass, the market town of Glossop is an excellent base for exploring some of the Peak District's classic walking country, including Black Hill, Bleaklow, Kinder Scout and the Longdendale Valley.

There's also plenty to interest visitors in picturesque Old Glossop, dating back to the 12th century, with its pretty stone cottages and medieval market cross. Manor Park, originally the grounds of the manor house of the Duke of Norfolk, is a popular spot for picnics, safe play and special events.

Down in the main town centre, there's plenty of evidence of Glossop's prosperous past, built on the cotton industry in the 19th and 20th century. Mills have now been imaginatively renovated to house a wide selection of shops, pubs and a hotel, and Norfolk Square is a fine example of Victorian civic pride.

Shoppers can browse everything from specialist independent shops to famous national stores on the bustling High Street, with its broad York stone pavements and welcoming vibe. Here you'll find everything from specialist books, original artwork and designer clothes to mouth-watering, award-winning local produce ranging from quality meat to craft beers.

Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks.

Walk Details for the rambles on the day

A/B Walk Leader: Tony Culverhouse Distance: 9 miles moderate, with a straight forward 8-mile option available

We set off from Glossop heading North through Manor Park to meet a track taking us into the Peak District National Park and on to Longdendale. Shortly after passing Valehouse Farm, walkers can decide whether to continue the A/B walk or do a shorter 8-mile route (don't worry, you can't get lost!)

The long walk will continue East to cross the dam between the Rhodeswood and Torside reservoirs.  We then head West along the northern side of the reservoirs, meeting up with the '8-milers', bringing us to Padfield.  We carry on south back into Glossop.

A short steep incline early on (see C/D walk) but mostly level. Very scenic reservoirs in Longdendale.

C/D Walk Leader: Lynn Bourke or Jane Cordingley Distance: 6 miles moderate with options for shorter walks if required

We head out of Glossop through Manor Park, which used to be the grounds of Glossop Hall.  We then head up to towards Swineshaw Reservoir, passing the Old Cross and the former Bailiff's House.  We then have a very short steep incline through woodland before walking through fields to Woodhead Road.  Another field leads us to Little Padfield Farm and then we continue into Padfield.

Once in Padfield, we walk to the train station and then on to Bankswood Park. We continue through woodland, emerging for a time from the woods to observe sweeping views across the valley. A sharp turn then takes us up a woodland path which leads up Castle Hill and to where the medieval motte and bailey Mouselow Castle once stood, occupying what is believed was the site of an Iron Age hillfort.

There is the option to walk to the mast on the hill to see the views from a high vantage point.  We then descend to Dinting Road, where we pass Howard Park before heading back to the centre of Glossop.

Mainly good tracks/paths, with some fields and woodland.  Four stiles.  Good scenery/views throughout.
