Details of the Walks available on the Day
A/B Walk
Leader: Tony Culverhouse Walking Distance: 9.5 miles moderate
We head west out of Ripon following the River Skell, then south along Park Wall to the medieval manor of Markenfield Hall. We continue south to Strait Lane, then north over Brickley Hills to Norcar Grange. We briefly head south-west along Whitcliffe Lane, then divert north to Ninevah. Fountain Lane leads us into the Fountains Abbey estate. We continue north-east through Studley Park to Studley Roger (a delightful small village) and on to Ripon.
A pleasant level walk (just a gentle climb over Brickley Hills).
C/D Walk
Leader: Michael Bates Walking Distance: 7.5 miles with a shorter 5-mile walk option available.
This is a lovely walk on the level, partly along the Ripon canal, to the pretty village of Bishop Monkton which has a stream running through the middle. On the way to the village the canal towpath passes a marina, a nature reserve, and Ripon Racecourse. Where the route leaves the canal towpath, those who do not wish to do the full walk should retrace their steps from here perhaps pausing to take a closer look at the nature reserve. Those remaining will proceed through fields and along tracks to Bishop Monkton which is an ideal spot for lunch. The return to Ripon is through field paths, passing a poultry farm where it is likely there will be lots of free range chickens on our pathway! The route is then along Pottery Lane to Littlethorpe. From here we rejoin the canal towpath back to the start.
Easy walking along good paths, tracks and country lanes. Three well-maintained stiles.
