Walk Memories Bowness

September

Ten walkers set off from Bowness on the A/B walk.  This was the September coach ramble and after the previous two months of rain it was a warm sunny day!

Our southern journey took us to Barker Knott, where we got our first view of the Langdale Fells in the distance. Shortly after walking along the Ghyll Head Road, we began to head north towards Rubbuts Hill where not only the Langdale Fells, but Ginkle Crags and the even more distant Borrowdale Fells could be seen.

Quite a number of chicks of either grouse or pheasants were spotted and one of the group almost stood on a lizard! We chatted to a farmer by a gate, whose sheepdog couldn’t wait to be stroked.

Our route across Undermilldale Common was botanically interesting, with the spent flowerheads of Bog Asphodel, a few clumps of Betony and vast swathes of Eyebright – a small plant, but very prominent.

As we began to complete our walk, our route took us up onto Brandt Fell, which was well worth the climb, with incredible views of Lake Windermere and accompanied by an array of Lakeland Fells as a backdrop.

Our descent into Bowness passed a stone which marks the end/start of the Dales Way, complete with a message informing us that it is 81 miles to Ilkley.
