10th May 2026 Hawkshead
The cobbled streets, squares and courtyards of much of Hawkshead and the beautiful whitewashed cottages, topped with local Lakeland slate, give this little place a magical feel.

Details of the Walks available on the Day appear below
A/B Walk Le ader: Michael Brooker-Carey Distance: 8 miles, moderate
750ft ascent
Leaving the car park, we take a short walk up the road to Loanthwaite Lane. We then head on to High Tock How before passing Blaham Tarn. We then head through Low Wray to the fine viewpoint of Fisherty How, overlooking Lake Windermere.
We then follow the banks of the Lake down to Wray Crag and continue up through the grounds of Wray Castle. We then climb to the summit of Latterbarrow with good views of the mountains. Finally, we descend to a short road and some field paths, bringing us back to Hawkshead.
C/D Walk Leader: Jane Cordingley Distance: 6.5 miles, moderate
Total Ascent: 680ft, approximately 3 stiles. Walking in the footsteps of Beatrix Potter. A gently undulating walk. We have done it before, but it's a good one!
Leaving Hawkshead, we head north on good tracks towards Loanthwaite Lane, before taking woodland and field paths to Outgate, then onto High Tock How. We skirt Blelham Tarn with, hopefully, far-reaching views. We reach a quiet back road and enter Wray Castle (once the summer home of the Potter family when Beatrix was young). Hopefully, we will have fantastic views if the weather is good. (toilets, café, lunch stop). Those wishing an easier walk could simply retrace their route back to Hawkhead at this point.
After lunch, we will walk to Windermere shoreline before field paths (stiles & mud) brings us back to Hole House Farm, then Crofts Head Farm and back to Hawkshead. Those wishing for a slightly longer walk could (at this point) continue to Colthouse to visit the Quaker Meeting House and return to town via a quiet back road. Good views all along the way.
VERY muddy when the walk was pioneered at the end of March.
