Our next day out is to Grasmere in the Lake District on 4th October!
Grasmere is perhaps best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found."
Set alongside Grasmere Lake, Grasmere is shrouded by a panorama of fells and mountains that provide the atmosphere so beloved of Wordsworth and the Romantic poets.

The area around Grasmere offers the walker a variety of easy and moderate walks. Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks - information about our led walks is sent out nearer the time (or check the website).
Tickets for our Grasmere trip are £25 per adult and can be purchased from 8am on 6th September 2026 in the following ways:

A/B Walk Leader: Tony Culverhouse Distance: 8 miles, moderate
We head south-east out of Grasmere along the "Coffin Road," passing Wordsworth's Dove Cottage. We then descend south, passing between the waters of Grasmere and Rydal Water to follow Loughrigg Terrace. We meet a lane which we follow south, leaving it to pass Loughrigg Tarn. We continue south past Little Loughrigg to meet the River Brathay and the crashing waters of Skelwith Force. We follow the river upstream along the Cumbria Way to the village of Elterwater. We next head uphill past Huntingstile Crag before shortly descending to meet a lane. This lane leads us back to Grasmere.
Some spectacular views of the nearby fells. A steep section from Elterwater, followed by a rocky/stony descent - just need to take it steady. There is an option for anyone wanting to avoid this last bit by taking the lane, which we join later. You can't get lost!
C/D Walk Leader: Michael Bates Distance: 5.5 miles easy, with a shorter option of 2.5 miles.
This lovely linear walk initially follows the River Rothay closely, then passes two lakes, i.e., Rydal Water and then Grasmere itself.
We leave the coach in Ambleside and head across Rothay Park, then take an excellent track northwards along the river towards Rydal. On reaching Rydal, those wishing to leave can head to the main road to catch the bus to Grasmere. It is understood that there is an hourly bus service passing Rydal Church 28 minutes past the hour. Those walkers remaining will follow the west shore of Rydal Water prior to reaching Grasmere Lake. Our route then takes us along the shoreline for some way before walking to a minor road. This road takes us all the way into Grasmere Village.
The walk follows good, well-used paths and tracks with very little in the way of hills.
