Our next day out is to Chirk, near Wrexham, on 2nd August!
Chirk (Y Waun in Welsh, meaning The Moor) is a town with a population of around 4,500 situated between Wrexham and Oswestry. The Wales/England border is immediately south of the town, on the other side of the River Ceiriog.
Chirk Castle, a National Trust property, is a medieval castle. Other attractions in the town include a section of Offa's Dyke and the Chirk Aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal, built in 1801 by Thomas Telford.

Details of the Walks available on the Day:
A/B Walk
Leader: David Mashiter Distance: 9 miles moderate
Initially, our route takes us to the Llangollen Canal, immediately taking the tunnel in a northerly direction. We continue walking along the attractive canal towpath for over two miles. On leaving the towpath, the route takes us through fields to Offa’s Dyke path, which we follow for some way along tracks and paths. There are lovely views of Chirk Castle and across to the Cheshire plain. We then start the steep descent into the attractive Ceiriog Valley and then following the river and roads towards the viaduct and aqueduct before returning to the village.
Paths, tracks and fields are in good order and any ascents are short.
C/D Walk
Leader: Graham Wrigglesworth Distance: Approx. 7.5 miles moderate
Taking the road to the station, crossing over just after we take a right turn through the wood, and then on through fields passing Mynattyn Wood on the left. Continuing to Chirk Castle, passing Home Farm, we turn right, passing the car park. We then make our way up past Sheepfolds to join Offa's Dyke path. We follow this to cross the A5 at Castle Mill, still on Offa's Dyke path, climbing up from the A5 till we join Llwybr Maelor Way. A left takes us down to the river where we rejoin Maelor Way, which we follow to Chirk bridge. We then follow the canal back to Chirk railway station, crossing the aqueduct, with an option to go through the tunnel. We return from the station back to town.
Easy walking with about 10 stiles.
