1st March 2026 Bollington

Nestled on the western edge of the Peak District National Park, Bollington is a small town in Cheshire. Through the Middle Ages, it was part of the private estate of the Earl of Chester.
Walk details are now available below.

A paper-coating and lace-making industry thrived here during the Industrial Revolution. One of its notable landmarks is White Nancy, a 6-metre-high stone obelisk commemorating the Battle of Waterloo.

More information about Bollington can be found here.

The area around Bollington offers the walker a large variety of easy and moderate walks. Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks - information about our led walks is sent out nearer the time.

Details of the Walks available on the Day appear below

A/B Walk  Leader: Michael Brooker-Carey  Distance: 8.5 miles, moderate
We walk to Clarence Mill, then along the Macclesfield Canal (over the short aqueduct), before heading up to the White Nancy - a grade II listed folly at the top of Kerridge Hill.  We then walk along the Saddle of Kerridge (with good views over the Cheshire Plain, including Jodrell Bank in the distance) and down to the village of Brookhouse. We then head up a hill, with good views of the Peak District uplands, before going down to the River Dean. We then have another short climb out of the clough and into Rainow village before heading along Oakenbank Lane to the Grindstone Trail, and back into Bollington.

Around 1,000ft total ascent. Muddy in places and several stiles.

C/D Walk  Leader: Jane Cordingley  Distance: 5 miles, moderate
Leaving the coach, we walk uphill through the town to join tracks taking us through Ingersley Vale and its mill ruins by the River Dean. We continue past Waukmill Farm and yet more industrial ruins with photo opportunities of water features.  Taking the Infinity Stone Path, we arrive in Rainow for a lunch stop.  Continuing along the River Dean, we steadily climb with one steep uphill section to the Beristal Road. From here, we head back towards Bollington, and from the elevated position, we should have great views over the surrounding valleys.  Passing the Tower Hill Folly, we take field tracks back to Bollington (which were very muddy when the walk was reccy'd). Taking the lower slopes of Kedridge Hill, we "skirt the Nancy" before walking back through town to join the Macclesfield canal for the last  3/4 mile.

Approx 5.5 miles, but no option to shorten.  Area of mud, with some tricky stiles and at least one short steep uphill pull. A shorter-than-normal walk to allow for stiles, uphill, mud, etc.

Those who want a shorter, flatter walk could head out to the Macclesfield canal - accessible from Clarence Mill, Clarence Rd.   Or the Middlewood Way, a disused railway line running from Macclesfield to Marple. This is accessible from the town - follow the signs for Middlewood Way.

The Bollington Discovery Centre, open Sunday 11 - 4, near the Waterside Cafe at Clarence Mill, also has local walking leaflets.
