Our next day out is to West Kirby (Wirral) on 5th July!
West Kirby is a coastal town on the Wirral and at the mouth of the River Dee. It is a picture-perfect seaside town that offers endless opportunities for all ages. The town has a Victorian promenade flanked by a Marine Lake, with breathtaking views of the Welsh hills.

Details of the Walks available on the Day:
A/B Walk Details
Leader: David Mashiter Distance: 9.5 miles moderate
This lovely walk affords several opportunities for outstanding views. All inclines are gentle. There are only two stiles with a mixture of woodland paths, coastal walking, a disused railway and some roads. Surfaces are generally good, but care is required on a section on Thurstaton Common where there are exposed sandstone rocks.
The route initially follows the Marine Lake and then the Wirral Way along thecoast to the disused Thurstaton Station. Here we break for lunch in a lovely setting following which we take the road up to Thurstaton. Soon we leave the road on to Thurstaton Common with its plethora of paths to a viewpoint before entering Royden Country Park. On leaving the park, the route crosses fields to Stapledon Wood as we approach the affluent Caldy area.
Thereafter, the route follows paths in a northerly direction, taking in two more viewpoints prior to descending steps taking us down the road. We then walk through part of Ashton Park and then along the Wirral Way back to the start.
C/D Walk Details
Leader: Michael Bates Distance: 5.5 miles easy, with a shorter 4-mile easy option
This lovely walk without stiles involves beaches, roads and fields. For those taking the shorter option, the walk is entirely flat. The longer version involves one climb up to the war memorial, but it is steady, not taxing, and should be well within the capability of C walkers. A little care is needed when traversing some sandstone slabs at Hilbre Point and when ascending to the war memorial. The beach path is tidal in parts, but it is considered that on the day all the beach will be accessible until late afternoon. Should things be different on the day, an alternative route will be available.
From the start, the route crosses the beach and then dunes on the King Charles III coastal path in the direction of Hoylake. Hilbre Point is an ideal spot for lunch unless the weather is inclement. Upon leaving the coast, the route follows roads passing the Royal Liverpool Golf Course, making our way to Hoylake Railway Station. Those opting for the shorter version will leave here, unaccompanied, following an easy path running parallel to the railway line back to town. C walkers will continue, soon reaching fields before entering Gilroy Nature Reserve. On leaving the reserve, we make our way along paths to the war memorial where we can enjoy stunning views in all directions. On leaving this area, the route takes us downhill, back to the road and town.
Should anyone wish to extend the walk by 1.5 miles, there is a nice flat walk around the lake.
