Details of the Walks available on the Day appear below

A/B Walk  Leader: Tony Culverhouse  Distance: 9.5 miles moderate
We leave the coach at the village of Ings, near Stavely, and head west through Schoolknot Plantation. We flirt briefly with the town of Windermere, before climbing quite a steep path to the famous Orrest Head (784 feet), giving us spectacular views over Lake Windermere and out to Coniston Old Man, the Langdales, Great Gable and Scafell. We descend the slippery when wet stony path and continue north to Troutbeck. We then head north-west along Robin Lane, giving us views to rival Orrest Head. We pass Jenkins Crag, giving us more great views as we descend to Ambleside.

Good walking conditions in general, with the ascent and descent from Orrest Head being the most contentious (quite steep and, as mentioned above, slippery in wet conditions).

C/D Walk  Leader: Graham Wrigglesworth  Distance: 7.5 miles moderate with options of 6.5 miles moderate and 3.5 miles easy

Starting from Ambleside, we set off through the park, crossing over the river to follow the country road through Rydal Dale to Rydal Bridge. Those wishing to do the 3.5-mile option now return to Ambleside by following the same route back. We then turn left on a steady climb up to the caves. After passing the caves we continue on the path above Rydal Water as far as White Moss Wood, where we descend down through the wood to follow the lower path on the lakeside to the bridge access for the Badger Inn. Just before the bridge, we take a path up the hill to join the country road back to the park bridge.

For the 6.5-mile walk, cross the bridge and pass through the park into Ambleside.  The 7.5-mile walk continues along the country road to the Hawkshead road, then we make our way on paths and road to the A591 at the garden centre. We then follow the A591 back into Ambleside.

1 stile if gate locked.  Good tracks and paths plus country lanes
