2nd February Uppermill

The small town/large village of Uppermill is on the northeast side of Greater Manchester. Tucked away in a valley of the Pennines on the Huddersfield  Narrow Canal, it is in a most picturesque location on the high moorland.

Uppermill is a popular stop for visitors to nearby Saddleworth and has a growing number of craft shops, restaurants, and cafes catering to the tourist market.

The Information Sheet for this trip can be found here.

More information about Uppermill can be found here.

The area around Uppermill offers the walker a large variety of easy and moderate walks. Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks - information about our led walks is sent out nearer the time.

Details of the Walks available on the Day appear below

A/B Walk  Leader: Michael Brooker-Carey  Distance: 8.5 miles moderate

Starting from the car park, we will go up the Huddersfield narrow canal for half a mile to the monumental railway viaduct. We then head east to Pob Green, climbing up to the ridge and onto the Pots and Pans stones and the Obelisk.
We then head on following the Oldham Way, down to and around Dovestone Reservoir, and from there we will head back to Uppermill via short stretches of the Mickelfield loop (for all the railway buffs!) and then back on the canal to Uppermill.

If we have adverse weather, we will miss out the higher ridge.
250 metres/820 feet of ascent

C/D Walk  UPDATED Leader: Jane Cordingley  Distance: 5.5 miles easy/moderate with a shorter option available

From where the coach drops us off, we make our way through town to pick up the Tame Valley Way and head North along an easy track.  After about 1 mile we encounter our first short climb of the day through woodlands at Ryefields (2 stiles). We then drop down through fields to join a minor road at Holly Grove and head towards the canal (those wishing a shorter walk can leave the group here to return to Uppermill). We then take field paths (stile without step up!) to arrive at Kiln Green and Diggle – again those wishing a shorter return can join the canal here. Otherwise, those wishing to stretch their legs a bit further can take the Oldham Way towards Diggle Edge, a short uphill, walking over the top of both the Huddersfield canal and the railway, past the air shaft and workings of the same.  (2 stiles).  Taking field and farm tracks, we return to Diggle and then along the canal tow path all the way back to Uppermill.  Could be extended at end of walk to make it up to 6.5 miles if required.

Those leaving walk earlier: Please take care on the tow path - very slippy/muddy in places, avoid getting too close to locks (very deep).  At Lock W25 cross the canal and continue on the left-hand side tow path back to Uppermill.  At Canal Bridge 77 leave the canal and take the road back into Uppermill.
