2nd March 2025 Settle

Our next day out will be to Settle on 2nd March!

Under the imposing limestone Attermire Scar limestone escarpment with the crag of Castleberg hovering above the town, Settle enjoys a splendid setting at the edge of some of England's most dramatic limestone country.

The information sheet for this trip can be found here.

The town is full of fascinating buildings and a labyrinth of narrow alleys and courtyards. Most buildings date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the French-style town hall now housing the Tourist Information Centre and the row of shops known as the Shambles.

More information about Settle can be found here.

The area around Settle offers the walker a large variety of easy and moderate walks. Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks - information about our led walks is sent out nearer the time.

Details of Walks available on the Day are shown below

A/B Walk Leader: Frank Mason  Distance: 9 miles moderate

Starting from the car park, we will walk up Constitution Hill and the Dales Highway to Attermire Scar.  We then continue along, passing caves and Winskill stones, to Catrigg Force. We then head to Stainforth, the River Ribble and Little Stainforth before following the Pennine Journey to Stackhouse.  Finally, we follow the Ribble Way back to Settle.

Around 1500 feet total ascent.

C/D Walk Leader: Michael Bates  Distance: C Walk: 7 miles moderate, D Walk: 5.5 miles easy
The C walk takes in Stainforth Force, Stainforth Village with the option of viewing a lovely waterfall, Catrigg Foss.
The D walkers will walk as far as Stainforth Force where we intend to take lunch. D walkers should return, self guided, back along the same route to Settle.

If you normally take the shorter option of a D walk, it is recommended that you do not undertake the longer C version, as after lunch the walk up to Catrigg Foss involves a relatively long climb along the Pennine Bridleway with a couple of steepish parts.

Further details for the C walk from Settle, the route follows the Dales Highway northwards fairly close to the River Ribble firstly to Stainforth Force and, following lunch, C walkers visit the village where there will be an opportunity for a toilet stop. From here, the route takes us uphill along a track to the beautiful Catrigg Foss. We will pause here for a little while to allow those who wish to descend to get the best views. Afterwards, we make our way back to Settle via Langcliffe.

On the whole paths are reasonably good with a couple of muddy sections. There are only about 6 stiles but there is a very short section before Stainforth Force where one needs to take extra care when climbing a bank up to a stone stile.
