Details of the Walks available on the Day:
A/B Walk Leader: David Mashiter Distance: 9 miles, easy, scenic flat walk
This walk incorporates three sections:
Section 1 - We will be dropped off at Galgate and make our way to the Glasson Branch Canal. This is a 3 and a half-mile walk with scenic views and a variety of different wildlife.
Section 2 - We arrive at Glasson Dock in time for lunch followed by a short walk around Glasson Basin with stunning views across the River Lune estuary to Sunderland Point. Walkers can return to Lancaster by bus from here if they do not wish to complete the full 9-mile walk.
Section 3 - We now make our way from Glasson Dock along the Lancashire Coastal Way - a disused railway heading to Lancaster. This part of the walk is 5 miles in length. Walkers may wish to take binoculars as there are opportunities to see wading birds on the mudflats.
C/D Walk Leader: Michael Brooker-Carey Distance: 7 miles, moderate with shorter options available
We start with a walk around the historical places in Lancaster. We head for St George's Quay and then on to the Maritime Museum. We then head up a short hill to the Cathedral and then to the Castle, where we have a short break to look around. We then head to the Judges Lodgings, then through the town to the almshouses and take a look at the little chapel. We then head to the City Hall, where we will have lunch.
After our break, we head up to the canal and take a short walk to near the hospital. At this point, there is the option to return to the city centre. The remaining walkers will then cross the road and go back along the canal, passing under the West Coast Mainline. After about 1 mile, we come off the canal and walk through a nature reserve and back to the city centre via the railway station and castle.
Generally an easy walk with one or two short hills.
