Led Walk Details:

A/B Walk

Leader: Tony Culverhouse   Distance: 10 miles moderate

A bit of everything on this walk: canal, sea front, woodland and moorland!

We leave Ulverston along the canal (at just over a mile, the shortest canal in the country), then head south to follow the estuary to the village of Bardsea and on to Sea Wood (Woodland Trust). We then head inland, climbing past a prehistoric stone circle to the trig point on Birkrigg Common (447 ft), giving us incredible views over Morecambe Bay. We then descend to Urswick and Middle Mount Barrow and on to Ulverston.

Steady climb to the trig point, but nothing too difficult.

C/D Walk

Leader: Jane Cordingley   Distance: C Walk: 6.5 miles moderate, D Walk: 4 miles easy

Leaving the coach, we make our way through town to Booths (toilets) before joining the Ulverston Canal (the shortest canal in Britain!) to Canal Foot. Then, heading North, we follow the coastline over the beach (slightly rocky underfoot) before joining good tracks to Plumpton Hall (dating from the 12th Century). Following field and quiet lanes, we pass through the hamlet of Next Ness before carefully crossing the A590 to the base of Hoad Hill and Ford Park.  3.5 miles – those wishing to leave the walk here can stroll through Ford Park (café and toilets) back into town.  The rest of us will take the easiest route up Hoad Hill to the John Barrow Monument, via Chittling Lane, at an easy pace with plenty of “enjoy the view" stops.  The summit affords views over the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the coastline.

Retracing our steps we then stroll through Ford Park into town.  A shorter walk than normal for a C walk but allows for the short climb up Hoad Hill.

NOTE: if weather is bad on the day, we will take an alternative “there and back” walk along the coastline to the Buddhist Temple, allowing time to explore the area (café, toilets, woodland walks) before heading back to town. (approx 6 miles).  No shorter option on this route.

Figure of 8 walk with no stiles. Total ascent: 536 ft.
