The name Pooley Bridge derives from a large pool in the River Eamont,”The Hill by the Pool”. The ‘Bridge’ part of the name was added in 1800.
The church of St. Paul's can be found in the centre of the village and dates from around 1868. Opposite the church is a row of very old houses, one of which was a blacksmiths.

WALK DETAILS
A/B Walk Leader Tony Culverhouse Walking Distance 10 miles Moderate.
The walk heads out from Pooley Bridge in a easterly direction towards Winder Hill Farm, then south east before diverting south west on to the edge of Askham Village. We then head across Riggingleys Top and over Askham Fell to the Cockpit. Our route continues southwest almost to the shore of Ullswater and then the walk heads north back into Pooley Bridge.

We alight the coach in Pooley Bridge and cross the bridge and take the roadside path heading out towards Salmond’s Plantation. After following field paths, we eventually reach Maiden Castleand then its along the quite road to Soulby. The bridleway is then followed to arrive at the River Eamont where a path running by the riverside is taken back into Pooley Bridge.
For those people requiring a slightly longer ramble we will extend the walk by taking the route along the Ullswater shore line, passing Gale Bay to Waterside House. This is a linear walk and will return by the same outward route. Extra walking distance 2 miles.

This walk follows the shoreline along Ullswater passing Gale Bale to Waterside House. It is a linear walk and will return via the outward route. Further details of the walk will be provided if required.
