Details of the Walks on the Day
A/B Walk
Leader: Tony Culverhouse. Distance: 9.5 miles moderate
We take the Pennine Way out of Hawes to the neighbouring village of Gayle, then up the hillside to Yorburgh and Wether Fell. We cross the Roman Cam High Road and descend south-east to Countersett, overlooking Semer Water. We then ascend north-east to follow High Lane which then descends to Burtersett. We then head across pastures back to Hawes.
A couple of moderate uphill sections.
C/D Walk.
Leader: Jane Cordingley Distance: C walk: 8 miles, D walk: 4.5 miles - both moderate
A figure-of-8 walk taking in Aysgill waterfall and Appersett Viaduct.
Note from Jane: There are a lot of stiles in this part of the country, I lost count of how many when I walked this route - about 20!!
Leaving Hawes, we head to Aysgill Waterfall via Gayle, taking field paths and roads. From Gayle we climb gently to enjoy far reaching views whilst crossing numerous field boundaries before descending to Gayle Beck with the option to take a 15-minute detour to view the waterfall (care needed – will be done in small groups). We loop back to Hawes via Faw Head,on field paths, good farm tracks and quiet roads (4.5 Miles). Those wishing to enjoy Hawes can leave us here. The rest will continue North West out of Hawes towards Thorney Mire House – turning off to view Appersett Viaduct before we reach the house. We will then return via Thorns, walking alongside the dismantled railway and a riverside path. 8 miles.
Some gradual uphill on both sections, lots of stiles and probably mud.
