A mile inland from the northern tip of Windermere lakeshore, Ambleside is a bustling town of outdoor equipment shops, bookshops, gift shops, cafes and restaurants and a cinema. Nestled in the valley between various fells, it's the start and end point for many classic lakeland walks.

Details of the Walks
A/B Walk
Leader: Tony Culverhouse. Distance: 8 miles moderate
We leave the coach at Windermere and climb the winding track to the famous viewpoint of Orrest Head (784 feet) with views over the lake and out to Coniston Old Man, the Langdales, Great Gable and Scafell. We descend the slippery when wet stony path and continue north to Troutbeck Village. We then head north-west along Robin Lane, giving us views to rival Orrest Head. We pass Jenkin's Crag, giving us more great views as we descend into Ambleside.
Good walking conditions, apart from the dodgy descent from Orrest Head.
C/D Walk
Leader: Graham Wrigglesworth Distance: 7.5 miles moderate with the option of an easy 3.5 miles or a moderate 6.5 miles available.
Starting from Ambleside we walk through the park, crossing over the river to follow the country road through Rydal Dale to Rydal Bridge. Here is where people wishing to do the 3.5 mile walk leave, returning back to Ambleside by the way we came.
We then turn left on a steady climb up to Rydal caves. After passing the caves, we continue on the path above Rydal Water as far as White Moss Wood, where we descend down through the wood to follow the lower path on the lakeside to the bridge access for the Badger Inn. Just before this we take a path up the hill to join the country road back to the park bridge. Those wishing to do the 6.5 mile walk cross the bridge here and pass through the park into Ambleside.
The remaining walkers carry on along the country road to the Hawkshead road then continue, making our way on paths and road, to the A591 at the garden centre. We then follow the A591 back into Ambleside
