Details of the Walks on the Day will appear below
A/B Walk Leader: Tony Culverhouse Distance: 9 miles moderate
We head north out of Saltaire to Walker Wood and on to Baildon. Our northern journey continues up Hope Hill to Dobruddens Farm before heading north-east, passing an area of old mine workings, to Acrehowe Hill. We cross Baildon Golf Course and pass Sconce Crag, where we join a bridleway passing Ash House Farm. We then start to head south west along Birch Close Lane to Glovershaw and on to the Shipley Glen. The Glen leads us back to Saltaire.
Some areas of rough, rocky terrain.
C/D Walk Leader: Michael Bates Distance: This walk has 3 options: 3 miles easy, 5 miles moderate, 6.5 miles moderate
With the second option of 5 miles, there is a further variation as it may be possible to return on the Shipley Glen Tramway (£1.50 single fare). This is normally open on Sundays but is subject to the availability of volunteers.
From the start the route takes us westwards along the canal* to an aqueduct where we descend some steps to the River Aire. From here we return in the direction of Saltaire to a point where those walking option one will continue along the river back to the start. Those remaining leave the river proceeding gradually uphill to the top of Shipley Glen and then crossing to Green Road where we intend to take lunch. Eventually we reach Walker Wood where those choosing option two can use the Tramway or walk back down the hill to Saltaire. Walkers remaining will take the path through Midgley Wood prior to emerging on to a road and then making our way back to the start.
There are no stiles and paths are very good. There is, however, a section through Shipley Glen where there are numerous tree roots and some large stones.
Plese note
*Following his recce, Michael has discovered that there will be a towpath closure on the canal which will affect the start of the walk and will impact on the length of the shorter walk. Option 1 will now probably be less than 3 miles.
