Bowness developed after the opening of the railway line from Oxenholme and Kendal to Windermere in 1847. Bowness was the nearest accessible point on the lake.
Now the Lake District’s most popular visitor destination, Bowness-on-Windermere is busy for much of the year. People come to enjoy the lake for sailing and watersports, or just to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the area and the town’s delightful setting.
The village of Windermere is about 1.5 miles from Bowness, or take a ferry across the lake to Sawrey and Hawkshead. Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks.
More information about Bowness can be found here.

WALK DETAILS for the Day
Bowness Coach Information sheet can be found here
A/B Walk
Leader: Tony Culverhouse Walking Distance: 10 miles Moderate
We will head south-east from Bowness to Lindeth, then south-west to Barker Knott. We continue in a southerly direction to Rosthwaite Heights and Ghyll Head Road. We then head north past Rubbuts Hill and Scout Hill. Our journey continues across Undermilk Common to Lindeth Lane. This takes us to within a stone's throw of Bowness where we climb to the viewpoint of Brant Fell with views over Lake Windermere.
C/D Walk
Leader: Michael Bates Distance: 6.5 miles, with the option of a shorter walk of just over 3 miles, both moderate
We leave the coach in Windermere, walking in the direction of Orrest Head, climbing steadily to the summit. From here there are amazing views of the lake and the mountains beyond making this an ideal spot for an early lunch. We leave here downhill in a northerly direction towards Causeway Farm, emerging on to a country lane. The lane is followed initially eastwards and then southwards eventually meeting the A591, which will be busy so cross with great care. At this point, those opting for the shorter walk will follow this road back into Windermere from where there is a decent bus service down into Bowness. Those remaining will continue in a southerly direction along paths crossing a railway line following which we will join the Dales Way shortly before Cleabarrow. Keeping to the Dales Way the tracks turn in a more westerly direction prior to taking a steep descent into Bowness.
The walk is on good paths, tracks and country lanes with only 3 stiles. There are some steps on the ascent to Orrest Head.
