4th February 2024
Our first coach trip in 2024 is to Grassington in February! Grassington is a Wharfedale market town (though often referred to as a 'village') in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. It is a lively centre with shops, cafés and a regular farmers market, as well as now being the location of the fictional market town Darrowby in Channel 5’s All Creatures Great and Small.
The information sheet for this trip is here.
More information about Grassington can be found here.
The area around Grassington offers the walker a large variety of easy and moderate walks. Explore the area individually or join one of our led walks.

Details of the Walks available on the Day
A/B Walk Leader Tony Culverhouse Walking Distance 10 miles or 9 miles. (See below) Moderate
We alight the coach in Grassington and head north out of the village along a quiet country lane, steadily climbing to the farmstead of Yarnsbury. The route then heads east along a track passing old disused lead mine workings, before diverting south alongside Hebden Beck down to the village of Hebden. Our journey now takes us into the pretty village of Burnsall, before following the Dales Way alongside the River Wharfe in a northerly direction. We now visit the ‘hidden’ village of Thorpe (subject to time) and across Strickshaw Hill to arrive at Linton Fall with it’s steep climb up Sedber Lane back to the car park in Grassington.
The route can be shortened to 9 miles by omitting Thorpe from the route. Steep climb at the start out of Grassington and then gentle field and riverside walking.
C/D Walk Leader: Michael Bates. Distance: 7 miles moderate with 2 shorter options of 6 miles or 4 miles (both easy) available.
The walk takes us through the village to join High Lane, gently climbing initially along tracks, from where there are lovely views. We then cross fields to Hebden where the route takes us down Back Lane to the river. At this point those wishing to do the shortest walk of 4 miles will turn right following the river bank back to Grassington.
Those remaining will cross the suspension bridge following the river bank to Burnsall. This is an ideal spot for lunch. Anyone opting for the 6-mile version after lunch will need to retrace their steps back along the river bank all the way to Grassington. The rest of us will proceed through a series of fields eventually climbing to the hamlet of Thorpe where we then follow a country lane downhill. Eventually we join field paths which take us towards the river and Linton Falls prior to the short climb to the coach park and the village.
To help you decide which is the best option for you, the 4 mile walk has 8 stiles (mainly wall stiles) to the point where walkers return to Grassington. The 6 mile version has the same number. The full 7 mile walk has a further 15 stiles (nearly all wall stiles) so if you like stiles this is the walk for you! On the whole the walk is on decent paths and tracks some of which are likely to be muddy.
