Details of the Walks on the Day will appear below

A/B Walk  Leader: Jean Ashcroft  Distance: 9 miles moderate/strenuous

We will leave the coach at Holmfirth, visiting Compo's grave. From Upperthong the walk will follow the Hills and Hamlets circular walk (details can be found here) around the Holme Valley. As well as Upperthong, we will visit Netherthong,Thongsbridge and New Mills.

Around 550 metres (1800 feet) of total ascent - Holmfirth is very hilly!

C/D Walk Leader: David Mashiter Distance: 8 miles or shorter option of 4 miles, both moderate

The route follows the A6024 road in a south-westerly direction for the first half mile. On leaving the road, the walk takes us through the Holme Valley close to the river before emerging on to Dobb Lane and then eventually reaching Brownhill Reservoir. Up to this point any inclines are gentle and those opting for the shorter version can either return by the same route or alternatively cross the reservoir dam, turn right and return to town on the road.

Those remaining will proceed through attractive woodland before reaching the hamlet of Holme. From here we make our way to Digley Reservoir, crossing the dam climbing to Hogley Green via Flush House and Carr Green. After carefully crossing the A635 road the route takes us to Upper Thong then along Hill Lane prior to returning to town down a very steep hill.

There are numerous stiles (mainly wall stiles) on the second part of the walk, but paths and tracks are good on the whole.

This is David's first experience of leading a walk for the Coach Rambles, but he has led walks for other groups for several years.
