7th July 2024 Keswick

Our next day out is to Keswick on the 7th July! Keswick, situated between Skiddaw and Derwentwater, has become the major centre for tourism in the northern Lake District. This pretty market town offers a wide range of attractions for visitors, from shops and restaurants to museums  with a difference, and boating trips around lake Derwentwater.

The information sheet for this trip can be found here.

Details of the Walks available on the Day are below

A/B Walk   Leader: Tony Culverhouse  Distance: 8 miles moderate
From Keswick, we follow the eastern shoreline of Derwentwater, passing such famous landmarks as Friar's Crag and Calfclose Bay. We then head inland along a steepish lane (not as steep as the footpath out of Hawes!) to the famous Ashness Bridge.  We head north-east along a rising path passing Falcon Crag to Walla Crag overlooking Derwentwater. We then begin to descend, passing Rakefoot through Spring Wood, before heading west through Castlehead Wood and Cocksfoot Wood back to Keswick.

This may be short for an A/B walk, but we are travelling to the northern-most part of the Lake District, so it will probably be around lunchtime when we arrive in Keswick.  The distance is due to time factors and not difficulty factors, although there is a bit of climbing involved.

C/D Walk  Leader: Jane Cordingley
Distance: approx 7 miles with 4-mile option available - all moderate

We leave Keswick, taking a woodland climb to the Castlerigg campsite and onto the Castlerigg Stone Circle for lunch and exploration. 502 ft of ascent.  Those wishing a very short walk can return to town via the roads from here (4 miles).  We then take  field paths and quiet country roads then join onto the disused railway line (Threlkeld to Keswick).  Due to the distance/time travelling to Keswick and to give everyone time in Keswick at the end of the walk we will all return to Keswick via the level, well surfaced discused railway track - which is punctuated with information boards, old photos etc making for a leisurely stroll.

Approx 7 miles.  1 stile ( avoidable via short detour).   My original plan to walk through Brundholme woods was scuppered by a disappearing concessionary path and some short steep descents with loose shale!!
