Details of the Walks on the Day are shown below
B Walk Leader Michael Counter Walking Distance 9 miles Moderate
The walk starts from the car park in Knaresborough and up through the church grounds and then along urban paths and ginnels to reach the countryside at Sweet Bits Farm. A bridleway is then followed passing Mill Farm and Castle Farm to arrive onto Shortstill Lane and then on through the villages of Flaxby and Goldsborough. Care is required as the route crosses the busy A59. The River Nidd is crossed at the old mill and then after going through the holiday park, the route now passes through the wooded Nidd Gorge to finally arrive at the base of the Castle. A steady climb up the steps leads to the Castle and market for those who wish to explore. The route contains several stiles, muddy paths and tree roots as we walk alongside the River Nidd.
C/D Walk Leader: Michael Bates Distance: 5.5 miles easy/moderate with a shorter option of 2.5 miles very easy
This lovely walk has been designed to take in some of the attractions of Knaresborough and ensuring that walkers have ample time to wander around the Christmas market, etc. and take in the seasonal atmosphere.
The route initially takes us through the grounds of Conyngham Hall, passing some magnificent giant redwood trees, prior to crossing the river then making our way through woodland back close to where we started. We then make our way uphill towards the town centre, veering off into the castle grounds which is an ideal spot for lunch. From here, those wanting to do the shorter version can leave. Those remaining will descend some steps to the river. After following the river for a short way the route takes us across a bridge and follows a path downstream towards Grimbald Bridge. Parts of this path are likely to be muddy and there are exposed tree roots. Great care will therefore be required in certain sections. Having crossed Grimbald Bridge we then return along the opposite bank on an excellent surface passing St. Robert’s Cave on our way back to the start.
Mostly easy walking on good surfaces and no stiles except for the stretch previously mentioned.
